UAH Starts 2-0 For First Time Since 2001

Box Score COLUMBIA, S.C. – For the first time since the 2001-02 season, the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team has started its season with a 2-0 record. The Lady Chargers defeated Benedict (1-1), 78-67, on Saturday afternoon at HRC Arena.

“I'm really, really excited about this start,” head coach Roy Heintz said. “They went on the road and picked up a big regional win. I'm very proud of the fact that as we continue to try to change the culture of the program, for the first time in 10 years, we start out 2-0. “

Sophomore Jasmine Hammon led the Lady Chargers with her first double-double of the year and sixth of her career, tallying 18 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Bailee Robinson and sophomore Jordan Smith also reached double-figures in points with 19 and 12, respectively.

Despite being outrebounded 50-43, UAH held the advantage is just about every other category en route to the victory. The Lady Chargers forced Benedict into 21 turnovers, scoring 27 points off the mishandles, while giving up the ball just 11 times.

“We're excited about where we're at,” Heintz said. “We've got a couple big games coming up so we're celebrating on the bus on the way home and then we'll prepare for two huge games. I'm really proud of our kids. They made stops down the stretch when we needed to and converted on opportunities.”

As a team shooting from the field, the Blue and White connected on 26-of-75 (40 percent) shots while holding Benedict to 23-of-63 (36.5 percent) on the night. Benedict's LaTeia Brailey poured in a game-high 22 points to lead the Tigers.

Up next, UAH travels to Pensacola, Fla. for the UWF Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 25-26. The Lady Chargers will face Emporia State and Henderson State, respectively.
