Chargers Solid Defensively In Loss

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The UAH hockey team limited its opposition to the lowest shot total allowed of the season on Friday night, but it was not enough as Bemidji State defeated the Chargers by a 3-0 score in a game that was closer than the score would indicate. UAH falls to 1-18-1 on the season, and the Beavers improve to 8-9-2.

UAH held the hosts to just 24 shots on the night.

The first 20 minutes saw a strong defensive effort by the Chargers as they limited BSU to only five shots on Clarke Saunders' goal, and UAH again held Bemidji State to single-digits in shots in the second period with the Beavers putting nine on target.

Unfortunately, BSU was able to capitalize on two of those shots.

Jake Areshenko scored at 3:17 of the middle frame, and Shea Walters tallied at 15:53 to send the Beavers into the second intermission up 2-0 despite the shots being even at 14 for both teams.

An empty-net goal at 18:54 of the final period by Ben Kinne wrapped up the scoring to produce the 3-0 final.

The Chargers had five opportunities on the power play including back-to-back chances late in the first, a five-minute chance in the middle of the second, and an abbreviated opportunity just past the midway point of the final period.

Though it was unable to take advantage of any of the power-play chances, UAH did finish the night a perfect 0-for-3 on the penalty kill.

Kyle Lysaght and Sebastian Geoffrion led the way for the Chargers with three shots on target, and Saunders ended the night with 22 saves.

The two teams will meet against Saturday night at 7:07 p.m.
