Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. – As the University of Alabama in Huntsville defeated Saint Leo, 86-59, Sunday at the FSC/Terrace Hotel Classic, the Lady Chargers accomplished something that has only been done twice before in program history – carry a 7-1 record to open a season. The victory moves UAH to 7-1 on the year while Saint Leo picks up just its second loss of the season, falling to 6-2.
The last time a UAH women's basketball team was 7-1, many of the student-athlete's were not even yet born. The 1982-82 and 1990-91 Lady Charger squads both started its campaigns 8-1.
UAH was led by four players scoring in double digits, including sophomore
Jasmine Hammon pouring in a game-high 20 points.
Shannon Steinert,
Bailee Robinson and
Jordan Smith joined Hammon with 14, 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Never trailing in the game, UAH held as much as a 10-point advantage in the first half before heading to the break with a 31-26 lead. Saint Leo cut the deficit to three with the first points of the second half, but UAH used a 10-0 run to lead by 13 with 17:39 remaining.
The Lions were able to chew away over the next seven minutes to cut the lead again to just five points at the 10-minute mark. However, UAH closed the game on a dominating 32-10 run en route to a 27-point victory, 86-59.
In the victory, the Lady Chargers turned in their best-shooting of the season, connecting on a season-best 12-of-30 from beyond the arc which is also a season-high .40 percent from 3-point land. As a team from the field, UAH shot 46.2 percent (30-of-65) while holding Saint Leo to 44.8 percent (26-of-58) shooting.
The UAH defense continues to be a factor as well as the Lady Chargers forced the Lions into 34 turnovers by which UAH scored 38 points.
