NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Hometown product
Brice Geoffrion tallied the first two goals of his career to lead the University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team to its first victory of the season, defeating Nebraska Omaha by a score of 3-1 at Bridgestone Arena on Friday night. With the win, the Chargers move to 1-14-1 on the year while the Mavericks fall to 7-7-3.
The Blue and White started the scoring off as Geoffrion – who had a large contingent of friends and family in the audience – found himself in front with an empty net as Dayn Belfour had moved too far to his left, and the Brentwood, Tenn., native capitalized to notch the first goal of his career at 10:58 of the second stanza.
The score also represented the first point of Geoffrion's career, and with assists on the play, freshmen
Doug Reid and
Andrew Creppin also recorded their first collegiate points.
The lead was short-lived, however, as the Mavericks tied the affair just over a minute later at 12:18 with Michael Young scoring to make it 1-1.
The 1-1 score at the second intermission was impressive, however, considering that the Chargers were outshot 31-12 through that point in the contest.
Taking over the team-lead in scoring,
Mac Roy collected a rebound left by Belfour and buried it with 11:57 remaining in the game to put the Chargers on top 2-1. The score marked Roy's fourth of the season, and
Justin Cseter picked up the assist on the goal for his third of the year and his fourth point.
Nearly earning his second goal of the contest, Geoffrion had a strong opportunity with UAH shorthanded late in the third. His first shot was deflected by Belfour, and Geoffrion had a wide-open net on the rebound try but he unfortunately put it into the side of the goal.
Geoffrion, however, would not be denied, and he cashed in for his second goal of the night on an empty net with just three seconds left in the game, sealing the victory for the Chargers.
Not to be overlooked,
Clarke Saunders was once again stellar in goal as he made 44 stops with UAH being outshot 45-17 on the night. Neither team was able to tally a marker on the power play as UNO was 0-for-4 while UAH went 0-for-1 with the man-advantage.
UAH and Nebraska Omaha will face each other again on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Bridgestone Arena.
