Lady Chargers Trample Tennessee Temple, 117-37

Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – With the second-most points scored in program history, the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team defeated Tennessee Temple, 117-37, Saturday afternoon at Spragins Hall. The only time a Lady Chargers squad has scored more points was during the 1991-92 season on Jan. 9, 1992 in a 121-27 victory over Stillman.

The 80-point margin of victory for the Lady Chargers is the third-largest in program history. In 1986-87, UAH defeated Mansfield by a score of 113-28 for a margin of 85 points. The largest margin goes to the 1991-92 team again as the squad defeated Stillman by 94 points, 121-27.

In addition, UAH nearly set a new school record for the most points scored in a half, falling just six points shy in the first half with 61 points. The record of 67 points was set by last year's team against Lambuth on Feb. 24, 2011.

Sophomore Jordan Smith led six UAH players in double figures, finding the bottom of the net for 22 points on the day while handing out eight assists. Redshirt freshman Shannon Steinert joined Smith with a career-best 17 points, including a 5-for-5 performance from beyond the arc.

The Lady Chargers never trailed in the game after opening the contest with a 17-3 lead. UAH extended its lead out to 39 points by the end of the first half, taking a 61-22 advantage into the lockerroom at halftime.

Over the first 9:17 to open the second half, UAH used a 25-7 run to jump out to an 86-29 lead. From there, the Lady Chargers cruised to the third-largest margin of victory in school history, 117-37.

As a team, UAH easily turned in its best shooting percentage of the season, connecting on 58 percent (37-of-63) from the field. The Lady Chargers were also lights out in 3-point land as the team connected on a season-high 14-of-24 shots (58 percent) from beyond the arc.

The Lady Chargers also had their best defensive game of the year, holding Tennessee Temple to 24 percent shooting (14-of-57) from the field, and allowing the Lady Crusaders to make just six shots (6-of-32) in the second half.

Up next, UAH opens Gulf South Conference play as the Blue and White travel to Livingston, Ala., to face West Alabama on Jan. 5. Tipoff at Pruitt Hall is slated for 5:30 p.m. CST.
