Chargers Score Twice Late To Knock Off CBU

Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The UAH men's soccer team used a pair of late goals Thursday afternoon to defeat visiting Christian Brothers 2-0 at Charger Field. With the victory, the Chargers improve to 2-1 on the year while CBU falls to 1-2.

The match was a non-conference contest, and the two teams will meet for their Gulf South Conference affair in Memphis, Tenn., on Oct. 16.

With the game scoreless through the first 80 minutes, the Chargers were able to end the stalemate on an exciting goal as Felix Hjalmarsson passed the ball up to Ragnar Gunnarsson before giving it right back to Hjalmarsson who rocketed it into the back of the net from the top of the box to put the Blue and White up 1-0 and giving the Reykjavik, Iceland, native his second score of the year.

The duo nearly teamed up again moments after the first strike to put the Chargers on top by a pair, but Hjalmarsson's attempt sailed just wide of the CBU net.

Not allowing his team to be denied a second goal, Hjalmarsson found Mitch Wilson streaking down the left side, sending the freshman a perfect ball that Wilson was able to deposit it for the 2-0 lead in the 83rd minute.

“Raggy and Felix had a great combination on the first goal,” Head Coach Mike Mitchell said following the contest. “Felix and Mitch combined on the second goal. I thought they were great shots, very hard to stop. They were just great goals. I think anybody would enjoy watching those kind of goals.”

With the three-point day, Hjalmarsson now sits second on the team with five points, joining Mitchell who also owns five points after tallying his second goal of the year.

Posting a clean sheet for the second time this season, junior keeper Kel Markert made three saves to improve to 2-1 on the year. Jaime Garcia made a pair of stops for the Bucs in picking up the loss and falling to 1-1.

The Chargers were more active offensively than Christian Brothers on the day, outshooting the visitors 11-5. Hjalmarsson led the way with seven, including three of team's four that were on target.

Looking to post back-to-back wins for the first time this season, the Chargers will host Tennessee Wesleyan on Saturday with kick-off slated for 2:30 p.m.
