HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | For the first time in six years, the UAH men's soccer team is preparing for a semifinal matchup in the Gulf South Conference Championship, and this time, they'll get to do it in front of a home crowd. The Chargers will face top-seeded Mississippi College on Friday at 3Â p.m. at the Loretta P. Spencer Sports Complex Championship Field in Huntsville.
This marks the first time UAH has competed in the GSC semifinals while it's being hosted in the Rocket City.
The two teams met earlier this season on Oct. 17 at Charger Park, where Mississippi College earned a 2-1 victory. The Choctaws come into the rematch leading the GSC in nearly every major offensive category, including goals scored (49), goal margin (1.53), shots (263), and shots on goal (122).
UAH counters with one of the league's stingiest defenses, ranking second in the GSC in goals allowed (14). Offensively, Oli Orzechowski continues to power the Chargers' attack, ranking second in the conference in shots per game (3.82), fifth in shots on goal (21), and tied for first in game-winning goals (3).
In goal, Sonny Wright has been a steady force all season. The junior ranks third in the GSC in goals-against average (0.810), save percentage (0.810), and shutouts (3).
The winner of Friday's semifinal will advance to the GSC Championship match, where they'll face the winner of the other semifinal between No. 2 West Florida and No. 3 Auburn Montgomery. The title match is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 16, at noon, also at the Loretta P. Spencer Sports Complex Championship Field.
