HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team (11-2, 2-0 GSC) returns to Gulf South Conference play on Jan. 12, hosting Valdosta State (11-2, 2-0 GSC) in a battle for sole possession of first place atop the league standings. Tipoff at Spragins Hall is slated for 5:30 p.m.

Thursday's contest has the potential to be the biggest in program history as UAH is just one win away from matching the best start since its inception in 1977-78. With a win, the Blue and White would move to 12-2 on the season, tying the 1982-83 squad which also started 12-2 en route to a 27-8 record – the most wins in a single season in UAH history. The Lady Chargers have already tied last season's total wins with 11 this year.

A win would also give UAH its first 3-0 start to GSC play in school history since joining the leauge in 1993.

In order to match the 12-2 and 3-0 marks, UAH will be looking for just its third win over VSU in the previous 10 meetings between the two schools. It would also be the first victory over a team ranked, or receiving votes, in USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' Poll this season as VSU is receiving votes in the latest poll. UAH dropped a 78-69 decision earlier this season on Dec. 19 to then-ranked No. 20 Florida Southern on the road.

Individually, sophomore guard Jasmine Hammon enters the contest needing just one point to reach 710 points for her career which would place her 20th in the UAH record books for all-time leading scorers. The Muscle Shoals, Ala., native is averaging more points per game over her career (18.2 PPG) than school record-holder Annette Fletcher (16.2 PPG) did en route to setting the mark at 1,487 points.

The Lady Blazers, currently on a nine-game winning streak, have two players averaging double digits in scoring, led by Brittany Ferguson with 15.8 points per game while Sczeny Hartry is adding 11.9 points per game. Ferguson is also leading the team on the glass with 8.5 rebounds per game.

UAH will be looking to keep up the impressive defensive efforts it has all season, forcing opponents into 351 turnovers (27.0/game) this season. Additionally, the Lady Chargers have been earning over a third (36.2 percent) of the season's total points off turnovers with 381 points.

Historically, VSU owns a significant advantage over UAH in the all-time series, defeating the Lady Chargers 27 times in 37 contests, including four of the last five. UAH was victorious in the last meeting between the two schools, however, taking down the Lady Blazers by a score of 69-65 in Huntsville.
