FLORENCE, Ala. – Sophomore 
Jordan Smith scored a game-high 14 points to lead the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team (15-3, 6-1 GSC) over rival North Alabama (11-8, 2-5 GSC) by a score of 60-44 Saturday at Flowers Hall. The win snaps a six-game losing streak to UNA and marks the first victory for UAH in Florence since Feb. 26, 2005.
 
In addition to Smith's 14 points, sophomore 
Jasmine Hammon and junior 
Morgan Duncan also scored in double digits with 12 and 10 points, respectively. On the glass, junior 
Natalie Kelley was the only player in the game in double digits with 10 rebounds.
 
Over the opening 4:04, the Lady Lions clung to a 5-0 lead while UAH struggled to find the bottom of the net, opening the game 0-for-8 from the field. The Lady Chargers finally found their stroke, both offensively and defensively, reeling off a 10-0 run to take a 10-5 advantage. UAH continued to push the pace, outscoring UNA 22-8 over the remainder of the half while holding the Lady Lions to a season-low 16.7 percent (4-of-24) shooting.
 
The defense stayed solid in the second half as UAH held UNA scoreless over the opening four minutes of the final half, which was a drought of over seven minutes for the Lady Lions, including the last 3:04 in the first half. UNA closed the contest on a 7-0 run, bringing the final score to 60-44 after UAH led by more than 20 points for most of the second half.
 
As a team, UAH connected on 32.8 percent (21-of-64) of its shots from the field on the day while UNA shot 32.0 percent (16-of-50). The Lady Lions were able to cut into the lead late in the game by shooting 46.2 percent (12-of-26), including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, in the second half. UAH also held a slim advantage on the glass, pulling down 44 rebounds in comparison to UNA's 37 boards.
 
Up next, UAH returns home for a Gulf South Conference contest against West Alabama on Thursday, Feb. 2, as the Lady Chargers look to start the season 10-0 at home, which would break the program record for the best home start to a season. Tipoff at Spragins Hall is slated for 5:30 p.m. CST.
