UAH Game Notes
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team opens up the 2012 portion of its schedule at West Alabama on Thursday. The contest is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. CST start at Pruitt Hall and will be the first women's game this season being radio broadcast on 97.7 FM.
The game will serve as the Gulf South Conference season-opener for both teams. UAH will be looking to move to 9-2 on the year for just the second time in program history. The 1982-83 Lady Chargers squad began their season 9-2 en route to a program-best 12-2 record through 14 games.
In its last outing, UAH handled Tennessee Temple, 117-37, marking the second-most points scored by a Blue and White squad in program history. Additionally, the 80-point margin of victory is the third-largest in school history, trailing the 1991-92 squad that defeated Stillman, 121-27, for the largest margin of victory and most points scored.
West Alabama is 5-6 this season and 1-2 in home games on the year with its lone home victory coming against Spring Hill, 77-42. The Tigers have claimed their last four contests after dropping six of seven games to open the season. The squad is led in scoring as well as rebounding by Brittany Weathers who is nearly averaging a double-double with 15.3 points per game and 9.2 rebounds per game.
The Tigers will face an offense that ranks fifth in the nation by scoring 80.5 points per game on 39.7 percent shooting. Only two of UAH's opponents have even held the Lady Chargers under 70 points this season though both resulted in UAH losses.
In addition, the Lady Chargers rank second nationally in turnover margin, carrying a 10.2 advantage into the contest. UAH has forced its opponents into 262 turnovers on the year while giving up the ball just 160 times this season.
The sophomore guard duo of
Jasmine Hammon and
Jordan Smith have led UAH all year, averaging 17.6 and 17 points per game, respectively. Hammon is also second on the team with 6.9 rebounds per game while Smith leads the team with 4.3 assists per game.
