UAH Defeats West Alabama; Starts Conference Play 1-0

Box Score LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team (9-2, 1-0 GSC) opened Gulf South Conference play Thursday evening, defeating West Alabama (5-7, 0-1 GSC) by a score of 63-55 at Pruitt Hall. It is the third time in the last four seasons UAH has started conference play with a win.
 
With just its second win over UWA in the last 10 years, the Lady Chargers start the season at 9-2 for the second time in program history. The 1982-83 UAH squad owns the best start in school history after beginning its campaign with a 12-2 record. UAH last defeated the Tigers in Livingston during the 2005-06 season.
 
Sophomore Jordan Smith led a trio of UAH players scoring in double digits, pouring in a game-high 20 points. Junior Bailee Robinson and sophomore Jasmine Hammon joined Smith in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively. In addition, junior Natalie Kelley pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds – the only player with double digit boards.
 
UWA led for the majority of the first half and by as many as five points on two occasions, but UAH was able to keep pace and take a one-point advantage into the break at 32-31.
 
In the second half, the Tigers regained the lead three different times and led by two, 48-46, with 8:31 remaining in the game. UAH again battled back, taking back the lead just over two minutes later.
 
With 3:35 left in the contest, the Lady Chargers led by just one point but closed on an 8-1 run en route to the 63-55 victory.
 
Despite being outshot in the game, UAH connected on 8-of-18 3-pointers while blanking UWA from beyond the arc at 0-for-6. Overall, the Lady Chargers shot 38.2 percent (21-of-55) from the field and the Tigers posted 40 percent (24-of-60) shooting on the night.
 
The Lady Chargers continue conference play on the road, facing West Georgia in Carrollton, Ga. this Saturday. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. CST at the Coliseum.
