HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville heads to Carrollton, Ga., for a conference contest against West Georgia on Saturday. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. CST at The Coliseum.
The Lady Chargers (9-2, 1-0 GSC) will be looking to open conference play at 2-0 for the just the second time in the past decade. The 1996-97 and 2005-06 Blue and White squads are currently the only UAH women's basketball teams to start 2-0 in the Gulf South Conference since joining the league in 1993.
In its last outing, UAH defeated West Alabama on the road by score of 63-55 behind sophomore
Jordan Smith's third consecutive game of scoring at least 20 points. The Hoover, Ala., native poured in a game-high 20 points to lead a trio of Lady Chargers in double digits.
West Georgia is 6-6 on the year and 1-0 in league play after defeating North Alabama in its conference opener at home on Thursday. The Wolves had to hold off a late charge by UNA after watching its seven-point lead get cut to two points with 34 second remaining. UWG is being led this season by Breonna Mosley and Shunice Hardy who are averaging 10.5 and 10.2 points per game, respectively.
Historically, UWG owns a 25-14 advantage in the all-time series over UAH and has claimed nine of the last 10 contests. With the Wolves currently holding a two-game winning streak over UAH, the Lady Chargers last defeated UWG on Feb. 22, 2010 by a sore of 59-56 in Huntsville. UAH hasn't beaten UWG in Carrollton since Feb. 18, 2006 when the Wolves fell 77-73.
After the West Georgia game, UAH takes an early break from conference play as it plays host to Oakland City on Jan. 9. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. CST at Spragins Hall.
