Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Behind the sophomore duo of
Jordan Smith and
Jasmine Hammon, the University of Alabama in Huntsville downed visiting Oakland City, 73-47, Monday afternoon at Spragins Hall. Smith posted a game-high 13 points while Hammon added 11 points on the day.
With the win, UAH improves to 11-2 on the year and is now just one victory away from tying the best start in program history. The 1982-83 program posted a 12-2 record through its first 14 contests. Oakland City falls to 4-10 this season.
Despite poor shooting, connecting on just 27 percent (22-of-79) from the field, the game was never really in question as the Lady Chargers led from the tip to the final buzzer. UAH jumped out to a 17-2 lead over the opening 11:22 and never looked back.
In addition to Smith and Hammon leading the way in scoring, freshman
Juanice Newton came within just one rebound of her career-best as the rookie pulled down a game-high 11 boards.
The pressure defense of the Blue and White continued to be a game-changer as well, forcing the Lady Oaks into 43 turnovers – the most by any UAH opponent this season. UAH helped that number with 25 steals, which is also the second-most this season. As it has all season, UAH made the most of the turnovers, scoring 30 points off the mishandles.
Up next, the Lady Chargers return to Gulf South Conference play on Jan. 12 as the squad plays host to Valdosta State. Tipoff from Spragins Hall is slated for 5:30 p.m. CST.
