HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Chargers held a late lead against Minnesota State but allowed a goal with under three minutes to play to come away with a 2-2 tie Saturday night at the Von Braun Center.
Senior goaltender
John Griggs was as good as it gets between the pipes for UAH (2-1-1), as he racked up 51 saves in the tie. Griggs was under attack all evening from the Mavericks (1-0-1) high-powered effort and showed his skill with both the stick and the glove.
The Chargers struck first when
Curtis deBruyn found the back of the net at the six minute mark. The senior captain scored his first goal of the season off an assist from
Brice Geoffrion and
Doug Reid.
The lead would last until early on in the second period, when Minnesota State's Johnny McInnis scored the equalizing goal.
UAH would answer when
Craig Pierce scored the go-ahead goal exactly two minutes later. Pierce has now scored in his first two games this season, showing good stick work for the Chargers in just his sophomore campaign.
With 2:14 showing on the clock the Chargers would see their first win at home in over a year slip away. Eriah Hayes scored on the redirect from Zach Palmquist and the air quickly left the VBC.
The two teams would skate evenly the rest of the way and into the overtime period resulting in a 2-2 tie.
It was a strong effort from the Chargers and a result they certainly wish could have gone in the “W” column. Overall UAH has to be pleased with the performance against the WCHA's Minnesota State Mavericks.
Penalties again plagued UAH, as they were in the penalty box too much for Griggs' liking. The Chargers finished with seven penalties in the game, yet none of the Minnesota State goals came on power plays.
The Chargers travel to the state of Minnesota next weekend when they take on St. Cloud State. Puck drops at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 19, in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
