Valdosta State Scores Late Goal To Defeat UAH 1-0

Box Score VALDOSTA, Ga. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team made a strong bid for a signature win on the road, but Valdosta State escaped with a 1-0 victory on Friday night. The tough loss drops the Lady Chargers to 5-8 (1-4 Gulf South Conference), while the Blazers improve to 9-1-1 (3-1-1 GSC).

The setback snaps what had been a four-game winning streak away from Huntsville for the Blue and White.

Playing a strong first 45 minutes, the Lady Chargers were even in shots at 3-3 after the first half, and it was UAH that had the first shot on goal in the contest as Khadijah Jannah saw an attempt of hers saved just under four minutes into the contest.

Shots on goal were also even at 1-1 at halftime.

Coming out of the break strong, the visitors had a strong chance to capture the lead as the team was awarded a penalty kick, but the effort was saved by VSU keeper Olivia Mills. UAH had a solid try on the rebound, also, but Mills got a hand on it to deflect it towards the crossbar which prevented the score.

Seemingly boosted by the big break, Valdosta State proceeded to build up an eventual advantage of 15-6 in shots and a 6-3 margin in attempts that reached the target despite the strong effort put forth by the Lady Chargers, and the hosts were finally able to tally in the waning moments, receiving more help from the iron as Caitlin Alderman scored on a shot that caromed off the crossbar and into the goal for the game-winner.

Moving to 82 saves on the season, Iris Gunnarsdottir turned away five shots in the contest.

The Lady Chargers will look to rebound from the decision on Sunday as they travel to West Georgia.
