BOX SCORE
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Kyle Lysaght scored the game-winner and the University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team picked up its first victory of the season with a 2-1 victory over Lake Superior State at Taffy Abel Arena.
UAH (1-9-1) picked up the much-needed win thanks to a Lysaght goal in the third period at 10:53 against the Lakers (5-6). It was Lysaght's third goal of the season, which now gives him the team lead after also leading the team in goals last season.
It looked as if the game would have the same song for UAH in 2012-13, after Kelin Ainsworth of LSS put home the first goal of the game and gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the second period. The Chargers had seen that story multiple times this year, and this time they had the response.
Trailing 1-0 entering the third period, UAH quickly responded when
Justin Cseter scored his first goal of the season at 18:22 to tie the game at 1-1. It was
Michael Webley and
Curtis deBruyn who recorded the assist on the play and for the first time since their 4-3 loss at American International, UAH was right in the thick of things down the stretch.
Both teams had their fair share of opportunities after the game-tying goal by Cseter, but it would be the sophomore from Marietta, Ga., who would send UAH back to the hotel with their hard-earned first victory of this year.
Lysaght didn't do it alone, as
Ben Reinhardt and
Alex Allan notched the double-assist on the goal. The UAH defense did their part down the stretch and put away the Lakers.
Despite holding a 36-22 shot advantage, Lake Superior State will fall under the .500 mark after allowing back-to-back unanswered goals late in the contest to the Chargers.
Senior goaltender
John Griggs picked up his first win of the season as well, after recording 35 crucial saves. Griggs played arguably his most solid game of the season on Friday night, and this time his team came through for him.
It is also Head Coach Kurt Kleinendorst's first win as head coach of UAH, after being hired to lead the program at the beginning of this season.
The Chargers will look for the series sweep tomorrow evening when they play the second game of the doubleheader. Puck drops at 6:05 p.m. central time.
