HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Jordan Smith needs just 20 points to become only the sixth player in University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball program history to reach 1,000 career points as the squad travels to Florida for a pair of key games against NCAA South Region foes Florida Tech and Nova Southeastern. UAH enters the weekend at a perfect 3-0.
Saturday's game against FIT will tip at 1 p.m. CST, while the contest with NSU on Sunday is set for 11 a.m. CST. Both games will be played at the Don Taft University Center on the Nova Southeastern Campus in Fort Lauderdale.
Smith has led the team in scoring through three games this year, averaging 20 points per contest to move to the precipice of history. The Hoover, Ala., native is aiming to join teammate
Jasmine Hammon and give the team two active 1,000 point scorers for the first-time ever as the duo continues its assault on the record books.
Annette Fletcher's all-time mark of 1,487 points is in great jeopardy as both Smith and Hammon are early into their junior campaigns.
Smith's strong start has allowed the Lady Chargers to outscore their opponents by nearly 21 points per game as UAH is averaging 79 per game while holding the opposition to just 58.3 points per contest, continuing a trend from last year when the team was ranked 35th in the country in scoring margin.
The Lady Chargers have never met either of this weekend's opponents on the hardwood.
Florida Tech has started the season 2-0 behind big wins over Puerto Rico - Rio Piedras and Puerto Rico - Mayaguez, while Nova also has a pair of wins against the Puerto Rico schools along with Palm Beach Atlantic to enter with a 3-0 mark.
The Sharks received votes in the preseason WBCA Top 25 Coaches' Poll.
