OMAHA, Neb. – Despite one of their strongest performances of the season, the University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team fell 3-2 to Nebraska Omaha on Friday night at CenturyLink Center.
UAH (1-11-1) cut the deficit to just one goal early in the third period, but ultimately fell on the road to the No. 14/15 Nebraska Omaha Mavericks (7-3-1) by one goal.
The Mavericks struck early in the first period when Ryan Walters found the back of the net, but the Chargers had a quick response five minutes later when
Graeme Strukoff scored the equalizer at 6:31. Defenseman
Anderson White and
Alex Allan tallied the assist on the goal that would send the two teams tied at the first intermission.
The hosts struck for two goals in the second period and took a 3-1 lead into the third period.
Frank Misuraca recorded his first goal of the season just under two minutes into the third period, when he finished a solid goal off an assist from
Justin Cseter and Allan, who added his second assist of the night.
UAH would fire off a couple more looks at goal but would come short and lose their bid at an upset effort on the road.
Nebraska Omaha held the shots on goal advantage at 33-18, despite UAH converted two goals on those attempts.
John Griggs picked up 30 saves in goal and allowed three goals to the No. 14/15 team in the country.
The Chargers will look to knock off the Mavericks tomorrow at 7:07 p.m. when the play the Mavericks for the second game of the weekend series.
