Lady Chargers Dispatch West Alabama 76-69

Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team dominated visiting West Alabama on Saturday night at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall, recording a 76-69 victory to move 2-0 in the Gulf South Conference and 5-2 overall. West Alabama falls to 3-3 (0-2 GSC).
 
The first three minutes of the contest saw the teams exchange the lead four times, but with her team trailing 5-4, Jordan Smith hit a 3-pointer to put the Lady Chargers up 7-5 with 16:55 left in the opening period and the squad would never trail again as the basket sparked a 12-0 run.
 
The lead would eventually grow in the period to as many as 21 at 35-14 with 5:24 left, but UWA closed the half out relatively strong to produce a 36-24 advantage for the Blue and White at the break.
 
In the opening stanza, the Lady Chargers outshot the visitors by a 41.7 percent to 21.9 percent clip.
 
Opening the second half up with a small 8-4 run, UWA pulled back to within single digits at 40-32 at the 17:45 mark, but UAH was able to keep the lead back in double figures through much of the rest of the contest until the waning moments when West Alabama pulled to within five at 72-67 with 31 seconds left.
 
A perfect 6-for-6 performance at the charity stripe for the hosts in the final minute, however, allowed the team to wrap up the victory.
 
Hitting four treys on the night, Smith paced the squad with 24 points, while teammate Jasmine Hammon scored 19 and dished out a team-best four assists. Natalie Kelley added 13 and grabbed eight rebounds, and freshman Halle Jarnagin led the team on the glass with 11 boards.
 
UWA did control one facet of the game – rebounding – and grabbed 55 rebounds compared to UAH's 38. The Tigers collected 27 of their boards on the offensive glass and scored 22 second chance points to help keep them in the ballgame.
 
With a 40.4 percent showing from the field on the night, UAH outshot the visitors for the game as UWA hit just 32.4 percent of their attempts.
 
The Lady Chargers will have the week off now before travelling to Trevecca Nazarene for a 2 p.m. contest on Saturday, Dec. 8.
