Wisconsin Too Strong for Chargers in 5-0 Loss

BOX SCORE
MADISON, Wis. –
Looking for their third victory in a row, the University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team came up short and fell 5-0 to Wisconsin on Thursday night at the Kohl Center.

UAH (3-13-1) struggled to get any quality looks at goal against the hungry Badgers (3-7-5), as the team was outshot 37-9 in the game.

The Chargers were hoping to build on their strong performances of late, but in the end there was too much talent to be had by the talented Badgers.

Wisconsin struck first at 4:00 minutes to take the early 1-0 lead they would hold until the very end. Nic Kerdiles found the back of the net from Kevin Schulze. The hosts would take a 2-0 lead on a power play goal by the team's leading scorer Michael Mersch, and that score would hold into the first intermission.

The second period was dominated by the Badgers, as they outshot UAH 17-2 and added their third goal of the game at 14:29. It was Mersch's second of the game to extend the Wisconsin lead.

The Badgers, who were itching for a win after having only one victory in their last 11 games, added a fourth goal at 2:51 in the third period and a fifth at 4:31 en route to the convincing home win. It was also just the first win at the Kohl Center for Wisconsin this season.

John Griggs (2-10-1) recorded 27 saves, but allowed all five of the Wisconsin goals. Gregg Gruehl entered the game late and finished with five saves.

The two teams will do battle again tomorrow night at 7 p.m. back at the Kohl Center. Blake Geoffrion, the older brother of Sebastian and Brice Geoffrion, will serve as the honorary captain and will drop the puck to start the game.
