No. 20 Miami Pushes Past UAH 3-1

OXFORD, Ohio – Facing its fourth straight nationally-ranked opponent, the UAH hockey team fell Friday night as it dropped a 3-1 decision at the hands of No. 20 Miami. The setback drops the Chargers to 2-27-1, while Miami improves to 16-13-2.

The meeting was the first between the two teams since meeting in the NCAA tournament in 2010.

The teams traded power-play goals in the first period with Miami's Tyler Biggs putting his team on top first with his seventh goal of the season at 9:28 of the opening period. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the RedHawks for just over four minutes until Jamie Easton knotted the affair at 13:52.

The senior netted his second strike of the season as he was set up by Lasse Uusivirta and Tom Durnie to send the contest into the first intermission tied at 1-1.

The hosts took control of the contest in the middle period, outshooting the Chargers by a 14-5 margin while scoring a pair of goals to lead 3-1. Byron Paulazzo and Miami's leading-scorer Reilly Smith tallied the markers both of which came with the teams skating at even strength.

The Blue and White turned in a solid defensive period in the third, holding the RedHawks to just eight shots on goal in the frame, but Miami also was strong as it limited UAH to just two shots in the period to end the game with a 32-12 advantage.

UAH goalie Clarke Saunders nearly recorded his seventh 30-save performance in eight games, coming up just one shy as he made 29 stops in the contest.

The Chargers did capture the battle in faceoff circle on the night, winning 32 of the 58 faceoffs on the night.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. CST.
