Lady Chargers Defeat UWF In Overtime, 90-88

Box Score
PENSACOLA, Fla. – It took a second-half comeback and overtime finish, but the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team (18-4, 9-2 GSC) defeated West Florida (9-14, 5-6 GSC), 90-88, at the UWF Field House on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Lady Chargers picked up their 18th victory of the 2011-12 season, which marks the most wins in a single season since the program joined the NCAA Division II ranks in 1986-87.

As a side note, UAH also avoided its first back-to-back losses of the season and swept UWF for the second straight season.

Throughout the first half, UAH and UWF both struggled to gain any momentum as the lead changed 11 times. The Argonauts held the advantage at the break, heading to the lockerroom with a 36-33 lead.

The Lady Chargers trailed 56-47 with 11 minutes to play in the second half before outscoring the Argonauts 31-22 down the stretch. UAH had a chance to put UWF away in regulation but sophomore Jordan Smith missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.

UAH scored the first seven points of overtime, taking an 85-78 lead over UWF with 2:19 remaining. The Lady Chargers extended the lead to eight points with 1:11 left before UWF put together an 8-1 rally to close the gap to just one point. However, with only five seconds left, junior Bailee Robinson made one-of-two free-throws to make it 90-88. UWF grabbed the rebound off the missed free-throw but couldn't get a shot off.

Junior Natalie Kelley led the Lady Chargers with 20 points and a game-high 15 rebounds to tally her third double-double this season, while fellow classmate Bailee Robinson scored 19 points. Sophomores Jasmine Hammon and Jordan Smith added 18 points each.

As a team, UWF held a significant advantage in shooting percentage, connecting on 52 percent (39-of-75) while UAH sunk 38.8 percent (26-of-67) of its shots. The Lady Chargers were able to get to the charity stripe 32 more times than UWF, however, and that accumulated for 28 crucial UAH points.

The Lady Chargers returns home to face Delta State on Thursday, Feb. 16, in a battle between the top two teams in the GSC. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CST at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall.
