Lady Chargers Down Oakland City, 93-87, In Shootout

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – As the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team defeated Oakland City, 93-87, on Monday night at the Johnson Center, the Lady Chargers locked up the third-most single season wins in program history. UAH improved to 21-4 on the year while Oakland City dropped to 10-13.
 
The Lady Chargers' attention immediately shifts to its regular season finale when the squad takes on rival North Alabama with Gulf South Conference title implications on the line. A win over the Lions will hand UAH its first-ever GSC regular season title. UAH and UNA will meet on the hardwood at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 5 p.m. CST.
 
Junior Morgan Duncan led three Lady Chargers who scored in double figures with a career-high 27 points, including a 5-of-10 performance from beyond the arc. With the 27 points, Duncan posted her first back-to-back 20 point games.
 
Sophomore Jordan Smith tied her season-best by pouring in 26 points on the night, including 4-of-7 from downtown, while dishing out a career-high 10 assists to notch her first double-double of the year – third of her career. Fellow classmate Jasmine Hammon added 11 points after making 6-of-8 from the charity stripe.
 
Oakland City began the contest by jumping out to a 7-0 lead, and uncharacteristically as of late, UAH found itself down 12 points, 29-17, by the 7:25 mark in the first half. Over the next 3:27, the Lady Chargers stormed back to take its first lead of the game, 32-31, on a 3-pointer by Smith. Junior Natalie Kelley laid in two more points on the next possession to close out a 17-2 Blue and White run.
 
After being down by as many as 12 points, UAH took a four-point lead, 39-35, to the break.
 
UAH had to overcome a brutal deep attack by Oakland City in the second half as the Lady Oaks connected on a near-perfect 9-of-11 from beyond the arc in the frame. OCU regained the lead three minutes into the second half behind a barrage of 3-pointers as Chelsea Jones made three consecutive in as many trips.
 
The Lady Chargers answered with a momentum-shattering 12-0 run to take a 60-53 lead over Oakland City, and wouldn't relinquish the advantage. UAH held as much as a 12-point lead in the second half en route to claiming its 21st victory of the year.
 
As a team, UAH connected on 44.1 percent of its shots from the field, including 13-of-28 from beyond the arc – the third-most successful 3-pointers in one game this year. In addition, the Lady Chargers improved to an unblemished 10-0 mark on the year when shooting 40 percent or better after posting over 40 percent in each of the past three games.
 
Despite the outstanding shooting from UAH, the Lady Oaks actually held the advantage as they made 54.7 percent from the field and also buried 13 attempts from 3-point land.
