HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Three late goals by the U.S. Under-18 propelled the national squad to a 6-3 victory over the University of Alabama in Huntsville in an exhibition contest at Propst Arena at the Von Braun Center on Saturday afternoon in a game that was a much closer affair than the score would indicate. The setback wraps up the 2011-12 season for the Chargers.
After trailing 1-0 at the first intermission with Matt Grzelcyk having scored for the Americans at 16:26 of the opening period, the Chargers scored a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes of the middle frame to climb on top 2-1.
Michael Webley put the Blue and White on the board with a goal at 3:49, being set up by
Justin Cseter and Lasse Uusivirta, and the defenseman Uusivirta continued his torrid ways with a strike at 9:26 to put the Chargers in front.
Kyle Lysaght picked up the helper on the Uusivirita goal.
The Americans responded with two goals of their own Nicolas Kerdiles and Ryan Hartman scored, and the teams headed into the third period with the score 3-2 in favor of the visitors.
At 6:58 of the final period, the Chargers knotted the affair at 3-3 when Jamie Easton set up
Doug Reid in Easton's final contest in the UAH uniform, but the Under-18s scored in rapid succession at 15:28, 16:15, and 17:53 of the third to capture the victory.
For the contest, the Chargers were outshot by the Under-18s by a 41-27 margin as
John Griggs made 35 stops in goal for UAH.
