UAH NOTES | TOURNAMENT BRACKET
NICEVILLE, Fla. – The second-seeded University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team (21-5, 11-3 GSC) will take on the seventh-seeded West Georgia Wolves on Thursday in the first round of the 2012 GSC Tournament, which is being held at The Arena on the campus of Northwest Florida State College. The game is slated to tipoff at 2:45 p.m. CST and will be broadcast on 97.7 FM The Zone.
The Lady Chargers will be making its return to the conference tournament for the first time since the 2007-08 season. UAH it will also be looking for its first-ever GSC Tournament victory, as the squad has made five previous trips only to make an early exit in each attempt.
Thursday's game will be the third between the two teams this season and 42nd overall. UAH has won the previous two meetings in the series, and three of the past five contests against the Wolves.
In the season's first meeting, which took place on Jan. 7, UAH came away with an 86-72 victory in Carrollton. The Lady Chargers were led by
Jasmine Hammon (25 points, 12 rebounds) and
Natalie Kelley (12 points, 15 rebounds) who posted double-doubles while
Bailee Robinson just fell short of a third double-double for UAH with 21 points and eight rebounds. UAH trailed 36-34 at the half in game one, before outscoring UWG 52-36 in the second half en route to an 86-52 victory.
In the latest meeting on Feb. 4, UAH led for nearly 30 minutes of the game with Hammon leading five players in double figures with her 19 points as the squad claimed an 85-66 win in Huntsville. As a team, the Lady Chargers put on a shooting clinic, sinking 54.5 percent from the field, including 16-of-32 from beyond the arc.
UWG enters the tournament after dropping six of its last seven conference games. Historically though, the Wolves are one of the more successful teams in the postseason, holding the fifth-most wins (8) in tournament play.
UAH and UWG will face-off as two contrasting styles of play as the Lady Chargers lead the GSC in scoring (78.6 PPG) while the Wolves rank third in the league in scoring defense (57.5 PPG). In addition, the two programs feature the top-two 3-point shooters in the GSC as Robinson (UAH) ranks first (40.4 percent) in the league and Krystal Delph (UWG) ranks second (39.4 percent).
Should UAH defeat West Georgia in the first round, the Lady Chargers would face the winner of the North Alabama versus Valdosta State game in the semifinals. That game would be played on Saturday, March 3, at 2:45 p.m. CST.
Thursday's quarterfinal matchup and Saturday's semifinals will be streamed LIVE on the internet by PSBLive.
