HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team, receiving votes for the second consecutive week in the
USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' Poll, returns to the road to face Gulf South Conference opponent Valdosta State in the second of two meetings between the programs this season. Tipoff at The Complex is scheduled for 5 p.m. CST and will be carried on 97.7 FM The Zone.
The Lady Chargers head to the Peach State with a 17-3 overall record and 8-1 record in GSC play after routing West Georgia, 85-66, on Saturday. Valdosta State returns home, where it is 10-1 this season, after playing its last two games on the road and has amassed a 16-5 overall mark and 6-3 league record.
With a victory on Thursday, UAH will have the most wins in a single season during the program's Division II era – joined in 1986-87. In order to reach the milestone, the Lady Chargers will have to unseat a VSU team that has won 10 consecutive GSC games at home.
When the two teams met earlier this season in Huntsville, sophomore
Jordan Smith posted a season-high 26 points to help the Lady Chargers overcome a six-point halftime deficit to record a 73-69 victory. Sophomore
Jasmine Hammon and junior
Bailee Robinson reached double figures in scoring as well with 19 and 14 points, respectively.
The Lady Chargers will again count on its pressure defense and high-octane offense if it is to be successful in becoming the first GSC team to win at VSU this season. That defense has forced opponents into a league-leading 24.7 turnovers per game while the team ranks fifth, nationally, in turnover margin. Hammon has led that effort with 2.6 steals per outing, including four swipes in two of the last three games.
Hammon has also led UAH's scoring attack, which ranks eighth in the nation with 78.9 points per game, in three of the last five games. She is averaging 18.4 points per game on 28-of-77 shooting (8-of-23 from 3-point) with 30 rebounds during that span.
VSU, which carries the nation's 13th-best scoring defense into the contest, is allowing opponents to just 54 points per game but is 5-5 when allowing more than 55 points this season. The Lady Blazers have handed league-leader Delta State its only loss of the year, when DSU visited The Complex. VSU is led by Brittany Ferguson's 17.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. Sczeny Hartry joins Ferguson as the only two players scoring in double figures with 11 points per outing. That pair has scored nearly half (77) of VSU's 171 points in its last three contests combined.
VSU leads the all-time series between the two programs by a 27-11 margin. However, UAH has claimed the last two meetings but the Lady Chargers have not defeated VSU in Valdosta in 13 consecutive trips. In the 19-year series between the programs, the only two UAH victories in Valdosta, Ga., came during the 1996-97 and 1997-98 campaigns.
