Lady Chargers Fall At Valdosta State, 65-55

Box Score
VALDOSTA, Ga. – Three Lady Chargers scored in double figures, led by sophomore Jasmine Hammon's double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, but the University of Alabama in Huntsville (17-4, 8-2 GSC) fell to Valdosta State (17-5, 7-3 GSC), 65-55, at The Complex on Thursday evening. The loss drops UAH into second place in the league for the first time this season as Delta State, who sits atop the standings alone now, defeated West Georgia tonight.

At the 2:18 mark in the first half, Hammon hit a jumper to mark her 834th career point, vaulting her into the top-10 in all-time scoring at UAH. The Muscle Shoals, Ala., native ended the night with 843 career points, ranking 10th in the UAH annals.

UAH kept things the contest close throughout the first half and held an early 4-0 lead, but VSU used an 11-4 run at the 14:54 mark to take a 20-13 lead. Minutes later, UAH pulled back to within three points but, again, the Lady Blazers used an 11-3 run to close the half. UAH headed to the lockerroom down, 35-24, at halftime.

UAH battled in the second half, keeping VSU within its reach, but the Lady Blazers started to pull away halfway through the half and would lead by as many as 16 points.

Despite holding VSU without a field goal over the final 4:11, the Lady Blazers executed on seven free throws that kept UAH from fully erasing the 16-point deficit. The Lady Chargers cut the VSU lead to just six points with 1:48 remaining wouldn't get any closer as VSU made good on its free throws to end the threat.

The Lady Blazers outrebounded UAH by a margin of 47-38, including 17 offensive boards that led to 15 VSU second-chance points. UAH held the edge at the free-throw line, shooting 83.3 percent (10-of-12) though VSU earned 18 more trips to the line to shoot 56.7 percent (17-of-30).

UAH was led by Hammon's sixth double-double this season and 11th of her career with a team-high 15 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow classmate Jordan Smith added 14 points for the Lady Chargers, while redshirt freshman Shannon Steinert chipped in 11 points.

VSU was paced by Bena Hanyard and Brittany Ferguson who both turned in game-high numbers. Hanyard posted a game-high 19 points while Ferguson pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds.

Next up, UAH wraps up its two-game road trip with a meeting against West Florida in Pensacola, Fla., on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. CST.
