UAH Falls To Delta State In NCAA First Round

Box Score
WINTER PARK, Fla. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team fell to the Delta State Lady Statesmen in the first round of the NCAA Women's South Region Tournament, 86-47, Friday at Warden Arena on the campus of Rollins College. The Lady Chargers finished their season at 23-7, marking the team's second-most victories in program history.

Sophomore Jasmine Hammon highlighted the night for UAH when she made the second of two free throw attempts at the 17:17 mark in the second half. With the made free throw, Hammon notched her 1,000th career point and became just the fifth Lady Charger to achieve the milestone in program history.

Hammon picked up her ninth double-double of the season, scoring 13 points to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds, while fellow sophomore Jordan Smith scored a team-high 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting.

Trailing 12-11 early in the first half, Delta State used a 22-6 run to push its lead out to 32-20 at the 7:30 mark. The Lady Statesmen continued to extend its lead, as the teams went to the half with the score at 51-28 in Delta State's favor.

DSU continued to sink shots in the second half while UAH struggled shooting from the field. For the game, the Lady Statesmen shot 55.9 percent on the night while the Lady Chargers connected on just 28 percent from the field.

UAH, one of the top-10 assist/turnover ratio teams in the nation, uncharacteristically turned the ball over 23 times in the contest, while only posting one assist.

Delta State (22-6), led by Veronica Walker's double-double of a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds, picked up its seventh straight first round victory in the NCAA South Region Tournament.

UAH now begins preparation for next season, and the future, as the team loses just one senior from this record-breaking Blue and White squad.
