HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The
Jimmy Mitchell era will officially begin on Thursday as the program's new head coach leads the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team in its home opener against North Georgia. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Charger Park.
In addition to it being Mitchell's debut, the contest will also mark the first game played at the new pitch adjacent to the baseball and softball fields on the UAH campus.
Mitchell comes to Huntsville after spending the previous 13 seasons at Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La., where he compiled a 131-112-20 record en route to earning three NCAA tournament appearances.
His 2012 UAH team returns eight starters from last year's squad that reached the semifinals of the Gulf South Conference Tournament, falling by a slim 3-2 decision to eventual champion North Alabama.
Among those returning include First-Team All-GSC goalkeeper
Iris Gunnarsdottir who set the program record for saves in a season in 2011 as she recorded 111 stops. The Reykjavik, Iceland, native was a preseason All-GSC selection and was joined by senior forward
Cady Reisman – an NSCA All-South Region selection last year.
The team's leading scorer from the 2011 campaign is also back as
Khadijah Jannah will look to build upon her nine goals from last season.
The all-time series with North Georgia has been an even one with the Lady Chargers holding the upper hand going 4-3-1 against the Saints. The two teams met last year with North Georgia winning 4-1 in Dahlonega, and the UNG side has been picked to finish third this season in the Peach Belt Conference.
