Box Score MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Winning in thrilling fashion on the road, the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team knocked off host Montevallo 2-1 in overtime on Tuesday night. The triumph moves the Lady Chargers to 2-3 on the season, and UM drops to 3-1-1.
After the Blue and White controlled play during the extra time,
Emily Hancock had a strong try clank off the post, and the ball caromed right to
Sydnie Fiocca who pushed it into the net for the deciding goal to give the freshman her second game-winning goal in UAH's past three contests.
The team leader offensively, Fiocca now owns a team-best seven points on the season.
Before the heroics in overtime, it was the Lady Chargers who struck first as
Khadijah Jannah was rewarded for a strong run, scoring a brilliant goal in the 15th minute to give her three goals for the campaign to match Fiocca's total.
Montevallo leveled the match just over four minutes later in the 19th when Camilla Alderin scored, and the contest would remain 1-1 through the duration of regulation.
Instrumental in keeping the contest tied,
Iris Gunnarsdottir turned in yet another strong performance as she stopped seven of the eight shots she would face including turning aside all four sent her way in the second half.
The contest almost did not require overtime as the Lady Chargers had several strong chances towards the end of the half including a
Cady Reisman attempt from a harsh angle right in front that hit the near post.
In the game, Montevallo outshot UAH by an 8-6 clip, and the hosts also held a 9-4 advantage in corners.
The Lady Chargers will continue their road trip with a pair of non-conference games against Gulf South Conference schools as they take on Christian Brothers and Delta State this weekend.
