HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Beginning the second half of conference play, the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team is set to continue its three-game road trip as it heads to West Georgia for a 4:30 p.m. CST contest on Thursday. The Lady Chargers enter the game at 8-11 (5-4 Gulf South Conference), while UWG owns a record of 11-6 (5-4 GSC).
The two teams sit in a tie for third place behind first-place Union who is 7-2 and a trio of teams – North Alabama, Delta State, and Shorter – who are 6-3 in second place.
When the Lady Chargers and West Georgia met earlier in the season in Huntsville, UAH erased a 16-point deficit in the second half to earn a 58-53 victory.
Jasmine Hammon scored 27 points – including 16 in the second half – and that performance marks the second-highest point output of the season for the junior.
Hammon currently ranks 28th in the nation with 18.3 points per game – a mark that is good for second in the Gulf South Conference – as she has scored in double figures in each of the team's contests on the year.
In the team's last game, Head Coach Roy Heintz changed the starting five as he inserted
Juanice Newton and
Morgan Duncan into the lineup. The move sparked Duncan to turn in her best performance of the season as she hit five 3-pointers and scored 19 points to lead the team in the tough 55-54 setback at Shorter.
With that loss, UAH will be looking to snap what is now a three-game slide, while the Wolves have lost two of their last three.
Mone Peoples is pacing West Georgia with 13.9 points per game as she shoots 40.0 percent from beyond the arc. She led UWG in the game in Huntsville with 13 points, while Jerlisa Taylor grabbed 10 rebounds in the contest.
Live stats and video for the contest will be available at uwgsports.com, and the game can be heard in the Tennessee Valley on 97.7 The Zone.
