Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Despite a score from its goalkeeper, the UAH women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 setback to Delta State at Charger Park Friday evening. With the loss, the Lady Chargers fall to 3-6-3 (1-5-1 GSC) on the season while Delta State improves to 3-6-1 (1-2-1 GSC).
The Lady Statesmen struck first in the 40th minute when Tabitha Hayden fed the ball to Lauren May for her fifth goal of the season to take a 1-0 lead. Hayden would then give DSU a 2-0 lead in the second half when she took a pass from Payten Pearson in the 50th minute.
UAH then would cut the lead in half in the 75th minute when senior goalkeeper
Iris Gunnarsdottir pushed forward to attempt a free quick from significant distance, and the attempt resulted in a goal as the ball sailed all the way into the net to make it 2-1.
The Lady Chargers made things interesting in the final minutes as
Alex Petermann's shot in the 81st minute just went left of the goal, and seven minutes later in the 88th minute,
Sydnie Fiocca also had a strong attempt to tie the contest but the shot was just high.
DSU doubled up on UAH in shots attempted 18-9 while also holding a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal as Gunnarsdottir saved seven shots that came her way. The evening ended up even at 5-5 in corner kicks.
The Lady Chargers will look to bounce back on Sunday when the squad welcomes Christian Brothers. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m. at Charger Park.
