Lady Chargers Roll to 104-71 Win at Montevallo

Box Score MONTEVALLO, Ala. – For only the second time in program history, the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team has scored more than 100 points in consecutive contests as the team travelled to Montevallo on Saturday and came away 104-71 winners. UAH improves to 2-0 with the victory, while the Falcons slip to 0-2.

The last time a UAH team passed the century mark in points in two straight games came during the 1980-81 season.

On this day, it was a big second half that propelled the Lady Chargers to its large victory as UAH turned a 40-33 margin at the halftime break into a blowout by outscoring the hosts 64-38 in the second period to easily grab the victory.

"I'm really excited about how we played today, especially with our pressure defenses forcing 35 turnovers," said Head Coach Roy Heintz. "We missed a lot of shots in the paint in the first half but really finished on our shots in the second half. We also shot free throws much better in that second half, too."

Five players reached double figures in scoring led by Jasmine Hammon's double-double effort as the senior scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to help the Lady Chargers outrebound Montevallo 60-49 on the evening.

The 11 rebounds place Hammon second all-time in UAH history on the glass with 596. Crystal Cooper owns the record with 604.

Also notching a double-double – the second of her career and the first since the 2011-12 season – was Juanice Newton who scored 10 while matching Hammon's 11-rebound performance, and six of her boards were on the offensive end.

Jordan Smith scored 16, Alysse Bishop added 14, and Shannon Steinert rounded out the double-figure scorers with 13.

All 11 players for UAH scored once again, and each Lady Charger registered double digits in minutes to help the team play the up-tempo, pressure-oriented style of basketball without growing weary.

"We will enjoy this and then start preparing on Monday for a very good Trevecca Nazarene team on Wednesday night," Heintz added.

UAH's fast pace of play significantly disrupted the Falcons as Montevallo turned the ball over 35 times. The Lady Chargers collected 16 steals with Steinert pacing the squad with five takeaways on the night. The frenetic-yet-controlled style also resulted in numerous whistles on the evening as UAH was 34-for-45 from the charity stripe with Montevallo connecting on 20 of its 33 free throws.

Both teams shot 36.9 percent from the field.

UAH will look to continue its torrid start to the season on Wednesday when the Lady Chargers host Trevecca Nazarene. Tip-off at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall is slated for 5:30 p.m.
