Lady Chargers Defeat Valdosta State to Advance

Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. – For the second consecutive season, the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team has advanced to the Gulf South Conference Tournament semifinals as the Lady Chargers knocked off Valdosta State 2-1 on Thursday night at Brosnaham Park. UAH improves to 5-9-5 with the victory, while VSU drops to 9-4-3.

The Lady Chargers will take on Christian Brothers on Friday night in the semifinals with kick-off slated for 7 p.m.

After conceding an early goal as VSU scored in the fourth minute, the Lady Chargers would not be deterred by the deficit and had numerous terrific chances in the opening half before finally getting on the board in the 37th minute when Jill Young scored to level the contest at 1-1.

The score was a beautiful strike for Young as she booted it from outside the box, over the outstretched hands of the VSU keepers and into the upper left corner.

The score would remain that way through the halftime break, and it was then the Lady Chargers who would score early in the second half as Sydnie Fiocca was set up by Moriah Bayse and Klaire Phillips in the 52nd minute to put UAH up 2-1.

UAH would then weather a late push by Valdosta State to hold on for the victory – the second in program history at the GSC Tournament.

In picking up the win in goal, Iris Gunnarsdottir stopped seven shots as VSU held an 8-7 advantage in shots that reached the target.
