About the Chargers
NATIONAL RECORD: UAH has started off the season with six straight games of more than 100 points, and that is now the NCAA Division II record for consecutive games scoring over the century mark. The old mark of five had been set by three teams: Valdosta State (1987), Hampton (1988), and Glenville State (2011).
Â
SIMPLY THE BEST: The Lady Chargers lead the nation in several statistical categories: scoring margin, scoring offense, steals per game, and turnover margin. Additionally, Shannon Steinert is pacing the country with 5.5 steals per game - a number that is nearly a complete steal per contest more than the nation's No. 2.
Â
STARTING TO BE NOTICED: With the release of the latest USA Today Sports Division II Top 25 on Tuesday, UAH received its first votes of the season in the national poll as the Lady Chargers garnered 16 points. Delta State -- who will visit Huntsville in this three-game homestand prior to Christmas -- is the only GSC school in the top 25 as the Lady Statesmen are tied for No. 12.
Â
NIGHTMARE ON DEFENSE: Through the first six games of the season, the Lady Chargers' defense has certainly been a nightmare for opposing teams. UAH has forced their opponents to commit an average of 33.8 turnovers per game. Not only is the defense forcing turnovers at a high rate, but the Lady Chargers are also converting them on the offensive end as the team is averaging 44.6 points a game off of turnovers.
Â
SHARING THE WEALTH: The Lady Chargers head into Saturday's matchup with the Tigers averaging a Gulf South Conference best 21.5 assists per game. UAH is assisting on 57 percent of their field goals (21.5/37.7). Jordan Smith is dishing out a team-high five assists.
About the Opponent
LEADING THE WAY: Senior Quentinette Odom has taken on a leading role for the Tigers this season as the forward is leading UWA in scoring with 13.2 points per game and in rebounding with 8.5 per contest. Fellow teammate Shameika Hart is second on the team in scoring (10.2 points per game) while Jada Williams leads the team in assists (2.7).
Â
LAST TIME OUT: In its last contest, UWA fell to Tuskegee on the road 68-47. Three players scored in double figures for the Tigers as Alexis Hewitt led with a team-high 16 points. Hewitt also led the team in rebounding as well with six boards.
Â
LOW SCORING AFFAIRS: UWA stands at fourth in the GSC allowing 58.3 points per game, and the most points UWA has given up so far is 76, which resulted in a loss to Montevallo on the road. While UWA has not been giving up a lot of points, the team has not been scoring at a high rate either. UWA has averaged 59.8 points per game this season while their highest scoring output is 70 in a win over Stillman.
Series History
OVERALL: The Tigers hold a 30-22 advantage in the all-time series with the Lady Chargers, but UAH has claimed five of the past six contests including three victories over the Tigers last season.
Â
LAST YEAR VERSUS UWA IN HUNTSVILLE: UAH captured a 76-69 victory in a matchup that was also early in the conference slate. Jordan Smith led the way with 24 points, and Halle Jarnagin was strong on the boards as she grabbed 19 rebounds.
Â
CHAMPIONSHIP REMATCH: The past two Gulf South Conference Tournament championship games have featured West Alabama and UAH with the Tigers winning in 2012 and the Lady Chargers taking home the title in 2013.
