HUNTSVILLE |
Jasmine Hammon notched the first 30-point game of her career, helping guide the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team to an 88-76 victory over visiting Christian Brothers on Thursday night at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. The Lady Chargers improve to 7-1 (2-0 Gulf South Conference) with the win, while CBU slips to 4-4 (0-2 GSC).
Â
With the win, the 2013-14 team becomes just the fourth in program history to reach the 7-1 mark. The 2011-12 squad also accomplished the feat, while the 1988-89 and 1990-91 teams both reached 8-1.
Â
Trailing 29-26 with 7:45 left in the opening half, the Lady Chargers would go on a 23-10 run to close out the period and take a 49-37 lead into the halftime break, and Hammon would proceed to score 16 of her points in the second half to send UAH to the victory.
Â
Christian Brothers turned in a strong shooting performance in the contest, hitting 50 percent of its attempts as the team was led by Breanna Ridgell as she scored 30 and grabbed 11 rebounds, but a 32-22 differential in points off turnovers helped UAH overcome the CBU showing from the floor.
Â
Hammon also had a double-double as she grabbed 12 rebounds to go along with her career-best night in scoring, and she was joined in double figures in scoring by the nation's sixth-best scorer
Jordan Smith who poured in 20 on the night.
Â
For the contest, UAH shot just 38.1 percent, and the rebounding battle was uncharacteristically tight for the Lady Chargers as they held just a 47-45 edge on the glass.
Â
UAH returns to conference action on Saturday when No. 11 Delta State visits for a 3 p.m. contest.
