Lady Chargers Fall In Back-And-Forth Contest

Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team lost a hard-fought battle to visiting Union on Thursday night at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. With the 75-70 setback, the Lady Chargers slip to 11-15 (8-8 Gulf South Conference), and Union improves to 17-6 (12-3 GSC).

The game was a close affair as Union held a slim 31-30 lead at the halftime break.

Jasmine Hammon scored four straight points to start the second period, and after a pair of free throws from Halle Jarnagin produced a one-point lead for the hosts, Bailee Robinson nailed a triple to give UAH a 37-33 lead just under two minutes into the stanza.

The lead would be the largest of the night for UAH in the tight game that featured 15 lead changes and nine ties – the last of which came after Jordan Smith nailed a 3-pointer to knot it up at 51-51 near the midway point of the second half. Union, however, would answer with a 6-0 run to grab a lead that it would not relinquish the rest of the way.

Astrid Huttemann paced the visitors as she led all scorers in the contest with 26 points while grabbing 10 rebounds to notch a double-double.

The Lady Chargers were led by Hammon who scored 16 points to move to within 14 points of breaking the school record for points in a career. She was joined in double figures by Jarnagin who tallied 12 while also grabbing a team-best seven rebounds.

Jarnagin's seven boards helped the Lady Chargers outrebound Union by a wide 48-27 margin, and UAH capitalized on 22 offensive rebounds to outscore the Lady Bulldogs 28-6 in second chance points.

However, Union protected the ball well, giving it up just 11 times compared to UAH's 21 turnovers and held a 21-12 advantage in points off miscues. The visitors also outshot the Lady Chargers from the field by a 43.9 percent to 38.7 percent clip.

The Lady Chargers will look to bounce back when they make the short drive to Florence, Ala., to battle rival North Alabama. Tip is slated for 1 p.m.
