UAH Throttles West Georgia 8-1 In Women's Tennis

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's tennis team picked up its third straight win to start the season as it also began conference play with a perfect mark, knocking off visiting West Georgia 8-1 on Monday afternoon. The Chargers now sit at 3-0 (1-0 Gulf South Conference).

“I am happy with the effort the ladies are putting in,” said first-year Head Coach Daniel Finn. “We are not always executing, but we are sure trying and it is paying off right now.”

The Lady Chargers started the contest off flat but were able to overcome the slow start to capture two of the three points available in doubles action.

The No. 2 duo of Katie Bryant and Maria Lawton started things off with an 8-1 win, and the No. 3 match finished shortly thereafter as Alejandra Pacheco and Kasi McDonald won by an 8-4 score. The No. 1 pairing fell in its match as UAH carried a 2-1 lead into singles play.

The team then proceeded to sweep all six singles points as no UAH players surrendered more than three games in any set.

Jessica Groupierre captured the third point of the day for the Lady Chargers when she won 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 1 position, while Pacheco won at No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-0 to give UAH the opportunity to seal the match which the team did when McDonald won at the No. 6 by scores of 6-0, 6-1.

Turning in the most dominating performance of the day, Lawton won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 and was followed by Lina Carvajal at the No. 4 as she won 6-0, 6-1. Producing the 8-1 final, Bryant won 6-1, 6-3 at the third position.

The team will continue conference play on Tuesday as it travels to West Alabama for a 2 p.m. match.
