HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Playing in their first game since being accepted into the WCHA, the University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team will travel to face fellow-independent Penn State this weekend.
The UAH (3-17-1) hockey program has been busy everywhere but on the ice this past month. On January 17, 2013, the Chargers were accepted into a new home in college hockey, the WCHA. After press conferences and congratulations', it is time for UAH to finish this season on a strong note starting against the Nittany Lions (10-13).
The Chargers have won three straight games, grant it against club teams Vanderbilt and Oklahoma; prior to that they had lost five straight, falling twice at Wisconsin and to No. 1-ranked Boston College and Air Force. UAH fell at home to Adrian on Jan. 4, 4-2.
Only four games remain on the 2012-13 schedule, with two this weekend at Penn State and two more at Minnesota Duluth on March 1 and 2. The Chargers have not played since Jan. 12, when they shutout Oklahoma 4-0 at home.
This weekend will be a matchup of the only two NCAA Division I independents. Penn State will be joining the newly-formed Big Ten Conference next season, while UAH will compete in the WCHA.
Penn State has been very competitive in their program's inaugural season. They have defeated the likes of Air Force, U.S. Under-18 National Team, Michigan State and American International. Penn State comes in having won their last three games and four of their last five.
UAH will look back to
Jeff Vanderlugt,
Kyle Lysaght and
Alex Allan to produce points this weekend. Vanderlugt leads the team in goals this season with seven so far, while Lysaght has tallied four.
Both games are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion.
