Lady Chargers Hold Off West Florida For 72-71 Win

Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Erasing an 18-point deficit, the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team defeated visiting West Florida 72-71 at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall on Saturday night. UAH improves to 10-13 (7-6 Gulf South Conference), and UWF slips to 5-16 (2-11 GSC).

With the West Florida trimmed down to 10 at 51-41 with 15:01 left in the second half, the Lady Chargers ripped off a 15-4 run that was punctuated by a Shannon Steinert 3-pointer at the 9:15 mark and placed UAH on top 56-55 – the first time the hosts were in front since just over five minutes into the contest.

The Lady Chargers would push ahead by as many as six points down the stretch, but UWF responded and pulled into a 71-71 tie with 46 seconds remaining in the game.

After Jasmine Hammon hit a free throw to make it 72-71 with 14 seconds left, the Lady Chargers would play strong defensively and though Hanna Vette would attempt a 3-point shot from nearly the same spot that Valdosta State hit its shot as the clock expired Thursday night, her try would clank off the front of the rim to give the Lady Chargers the victory.

Scoring 11 of her points in the second half, Jordan Smith hit four triples en route to scoring a game-high 21 points and leading a quartet of Lady Chargers who scored in double figures.

Hammon added 12 to pull within 65 points of eclipsing the program record for points in a career, and freshman Halle Jarnagin nearly collected a double-double as she scored 11 while grabbing a team-best eight rebounds.

Juanice Newton was strong off the bench as she chipped in with 10 points on the night to help the Lady Charger bench outscore UWF's reserves 24-11.

After shooting better than 52 percent in the first half, the Argos closed the game shooting 45.2 percent from the floor to outperform UAH who shot 31.8 percent for the night. The Lady Chargers, however, won the battle on the glass by a 43-42 clip.

UAH will now once again hit the road, starting a two-game trip away from the Rocket City with a contest at Christian Brothers on Thursday.
