HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Dropping a close match to a Division I opponent, the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's tennis team fell 4-3 to visiting Alabama A&M on Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Chargers slip to 4-3 on the season with the setback.
“The girls really started slow today,” said Head Coach Daniel Finn. “We just couldn't get ourselves out of the hole. We didn't lose due to a lack of effort; we just couldn't seem to get anything going. I told them sometimes we will have these days, and we have to be able to put this behind us.”
The two teams played under Division I rules, and Alabama A&M captured the doubles point as it won 8-3 at the second position before winning 8-3 at the No. 1 match to secure the 1-0 lead going into singles.
Jessica Groupierre and
Kasi McDonald did win at No. 3 doubles 8-4.
The visitors pushed the advantage out to 3-0 after winning at the three and two positions in singles play, but
Katie Bryant then gave UAH its first point of the contest when she won 6-1, 6-3 in No. 4 singles.
The victory provided a spark for the team and McDonald made it 3-2 when she won at the sixth position 6-0, 6-1.
The match then came down to the Nos. 1 and 5 positions, and Groupierre fought valiantly in the No. 1 match but ultimately fell 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 to give the day to A&M. The Lady Chargers did pick up another point to produce the 4-3 final as
Alejandra Pacheco won 7-6 (3), 6-0 at the fifth spot.
