Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Winning in the regular season finale on Saturday night, the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team defeated visiting Shorter by a 69-63 score on Senior Night at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. The Lady Chargers finish this portion of the schedule at 12-16 (9-9 Gulf South Conference), and Shorter concludes the year at 15-11 (10-8 GSC).
The Lady Chargers now advance to the Gulf South Conference Basketball Championships where the team will be the No. 5 seed and take on fourth-seeded Valdosta State at noon on Friday.
On a night where the group played its final home game, the team's four seniors each scored as all 11 players who recorded minutes for the Lady Chargers notched points.
Led by
Jasmine Hammon's 10 points in the first period along with an eight-point showing off the bench from
Kendra Jones, the team pushed out to a strong 39-21 advantage at the halftime break. In building up the lead, the team shot 12-of-36 from the field while limiting the Lady Hawks to just a 28.6 percent shooting performance.
The Lady Chargers led by as many as 21 points on a pair of occasions in the first six minutes of the second half, but the visitors were determined to put themselves back in the ballgame and trimmed the UAH lead all the way down to six at 57-51 with 5:28 left in the game.
UAH would maintain the advantage, however, and with the score 67-63 in the final seconds,
Morgan Duncan hit a pair of critical free throws in her final game at Spragins Hall to ice the contest.
Hammon finished the night as the game's leading scorer as she scored 20 including burying three shots from beyond the arc. Fellow junior
Jordan Smith also scored in double figures with 12 points.
Scoring seven and grabbing six rebounds was senior
Bailee Robinson, and classmate
Natalie Kelley paced the team on the glass with nine rebounds to help the team outrebound Shorter by a 51-42 margin.
For the game, the Lady Chargers were outshot 35.5 percent to 29.9 percent, but UAH hit two more triples than Shorter and outscored the Lady Hawks 14-9 in points off of turnovers to help provide the winning margin.
Shorter was led by Shelby Farrer who scored 14.
