Box Score HOMEWOOD, Ala. – Employing a new defensive strategy, the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team forced 24 turnovers and cruised to a 90-79 victory over Valdosta State in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Raymond James Gulf South Conference Women's Basketball Championships. The Lady Chargers advance to the semifinals with a record of 13-16, while VSU drops to 16-11.
 
UAH established a new program record for points in a GSC tournament game in the game, surpassing the old mark of 74 which was set in the championship game setback a season ago.
 
Roaring out of the gates, the Lady Chargers scored the first 13 points of the game as the team established a 13-0 lead just over two minutes into the game, and the team would eventually see the advantage grow to as many as 28 points in the period before taking a stunning 54-29 lead into the locker room at the break.
 
The 54 points is a season-high output for the Lady Chargers in a half this season.
 
UAH shot 50 percent in the half including a 6-for-11 showing from beyond the arc, and three players scored in double figures in the half led by Jasmine Hammon who scored 14. Playing swarming defense, the Lady Chargers forced 18 turnovers and scored 23 points off of the giveaways.
 
Though the team would cool down and shoot just 27.8 percent in the second half, the lead would remain a significant one through much of the second stanza until Valdosta State was able to narrow the gap to nine on three occasions in the final minute and a half of the game.
 
As it did through the rest of the contest, however, UAH would hit its free throws down the stretch to keep the Lady Blazers at bay.
 
The team went 38-for-43 from the charity stripe in the game, and the 38 successful free throws represent a number that was just two off of the program record of 40.
 
Hammon finished the afternoon with 26 points while teammate Jordan Smith poured in 23 as both shot over 50 percent from the field on the day. Joining the pair in double figures was Bailee Robinson who scored 13 and Natalie Kelley who tallied 12.
 
Helping the Lady Chargers own a 37-22 advantage on the glass, Hammon led the way with nine rebounds including six on the offensive end as UAH outscored Valdosta State 10-2 in second chance points.
 
VSU outshot the Lady Chargers 54.2 percent to 42.6 percent, but the team's 24 turnovers led to 30 points for UAH.
 
UAH will now take on Delta State at noon on Saturday. The two teams split the regular season series with both defending their respective home courts.
