NORMAL, Ala. – With a clinching point from Huntsville native
Katie Bryant, the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's tennis team earned revenge for a loss from earlier in the season and defeated Alabama A&M 4-3 on the road Tuesday evening. The exciting victory in the season's final regular season match improves the Lady Chargers to 8-10 on the season.
“I cannot say enough about how proud I am of the team's effort,” said Head Coach Daniel Finn after the victory. “This was a team who beat us just about a month ago, and I think that has to say a lot about the level of improvement and hard work these girls have put in this season. This is a great note to end the regular season on and go into the conference tournament.”
The Lady Chargers will now turn their attention to the postseason as the squad will open the Gulf South Conference Women's Tennis Tournament at 8:30 a.m. against West Alabama.
On this evening, UAH captured the first point as it won two of the three matches in doubles to earn a 1-0 advantage as the match was played under Division I rules.
Jessica Groupierre teamed up with Bryant at No. 2 doubles for an 8-3 win while the No. 3 pairing of
Maria Lawton and
Kasi McDonald won 8-0.
In singles play, McDonald provided the team with a 2-0 lead after she cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at the sixth position, and after A&M made it 2-1,
Alejandra Pacheco won 6-2, 6-0 with a win at the fifth position to put the Lady Chargers on the cusp of victory with a 3-1 lead.
The hosts would not back down, however, winning at the first and second spots to tie the match and put the contest squarely on the shoulders of Bryant at the fourth position.
After falling behind with a 2-6 setback in her match's first set, the sophomore who attended Grissom High School bounced back and won 6-3 in the second set and 6-1 in the deciding frame to produce the 4-3 victory for her team.
