FLORENCE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's tennis team traveled to North Alabama on Tuesday and fell 6-3 to the team that has been strong in conference play. The Lady Chargers slip to 7-9 (3-5 Gulf South Conference) with the setback while UNA improves to 6-10 (5-3 GSC).
“Our ladies battled today,” said Head Coach Daniel Finn following the match. “We just came up on the short end against a good team. Give credit to UNA – they have a solid team.”
North Alabama captured the first two doubles points, though the No. 1 pairing of
Lina Carvajal and
Alejandra Pacheco nearly picked up a win, falling 8-6 in a tight match. Providing the Lady Chargers with a point heading into singles action, the third-position duo of
Jessica Groupierre and
Brandi Dykes won 9-7 to make it 2-1 overall.
The hosts pushed the advantage out to 3-1 with a win at the first spot in singles, but Dykes was a 6-4, 6-1 winner at the No. 6 singles match to pull UAH back to within one at 3-2.
A point for the Lions at the second position pushed them to the brink of victory, but
Katie Bryant provided the Lady Chargers with life when she won 7-6, 6-1 in the No. 5 singles match to create a 4-3 score overall in the match.
UNA proceeded to then win the points at the fourth and third positions, however, to seal the 6-3 victory.
Continuing play on the road, the Lady Chargers will head to Montevallo on Wednesday. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
