Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team travelled to Union on Thursday night, falling 105-86 in Gulf South Conference play. The setback drops UAH to 9-6 (4-5 GSC), while Union improves to 11-4 (6-3 GSC).
Â
The first half of the contest was one of momentum swings as UAH ripped off a 21-5 run over a six-minute span to enjoy a 29-19 lead at the 10:12 mark of the frame, and the hosts would then outscore the Lady Chargers 29-10 over the next nine minutes to grab a 39-48 advantage with just over a minute remaining in the half.
Â
UAH would trim the deficit in the final moments of the stanza as
Jasmine Hammon made a layup fall and
Jordan Smith hit a 3-pointer to cut the Union advantage to just four at 48-44 at the half. The points capped off a strong half for the GSC's top scoring duo as Hammon scored 17 and Smith added 14 in the period.
Â
The deficit would remain manageable through the opening minutes of the second half, and six straight points from the Lady Chargers – punctuated by an old-fashioned 3-point play by Hammon – allowed UAH to regain the lead at 62-61 with 13:16 left in the game, but Union would dominate the remainder of the contest, eventually leading by as many as 28 en route to the victory.
Â
Smith hit four 3s on the night to total 23 and lead UAH, while Hammon scored 22 and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds. Also scoring in double figures was
Shannon Steinert who chipped in with 11, and
Juanice Newton was strong on the glass once again as she collected seven boards.
Â
The hosts featured five players in double figures led by Amy Philamlee who scored 32 while going 8-for-13 from the field to help Union outshot UAH by a 53.3 percent to 38.4 percent clip. Philamlee and Astrid Huttemann also both grabbed nine rebounds each to help Union outrebound UAH 44-34.
Â
UAH will now turn its attention to rival North Alabama as the Lady Chargers will travel to Florence for a 1 p.m. contest on Saturday.
