About the Chargers
LAST WEEKEND: UAH opened the 2014-15 season with a pair of losses at Colorado College over the weekend. UAH was defeated by a one-goal margin in both games, as CC won on Friday, 3-2, and on Saturday, 4-3.
IN THE POLLS: UAH received eight votes in the USCHO rankings released on Monday. The Chargers weekend opponent, Bowling Green, also received votes in the poll. No. 4 Ferris State and No. 12 Minnesota State were the lone WCHA teams to be ranked.
SECOND SCORING: All five UAH goals this past weekend were scored in the second period. Sophomore
Brandon Carlson led the Herd in Saturday's contest with two goals and one assist, a career-high goal and point total.
Frank Misuraca,
Brent Fletcher and
Jeff Vanderlugt notched goals for UAH, while seven different players totaled their first assist of the season.
LESS IS MORE: The Chargers did a spectacular job defending the power play in two games this past weekend, holding CC to one goal in 12 chances. The UAH offense worked efficiently in power plays, as two goals were scored in five chances. Carlson and Fletcher notched the Chargers' power-play goals. Last year, UAH had a 29 percent success rate when defending the power play.
IN GOAL: UAH's goaltending duo of
Carmine Guerriero and
Matt Larose continued to play well in the opening of the new season, combining for 78 saves last weekend. Guerriero had a better save percentage (.925), while Larose saved a higher volume of shots (41). The pair has totaled a 3.50 goal against average and .918 save percentage after two games.
SOPHOMORE RISING: Carlson was active on both the offensive and defensive side of the puck, as the Huntington Beach, California native had a team-best eight blocks. Following Carlson in total blocks are
Cody Marooney (4),
Matt Salhany (4),
Frank Misuraca (3) and
Ben Reinhardt (3). Overall, UAH has totaled 29 blocks compared to their opponents' 22.
MATCHUP HISTORY: The Chargers will host the Bowling Green Falcons at Propst Arena at Von Braun Center for the eighth time in program history. BGSU holds the advantage in the all-time series with a record of 3-10-1. UAH has won twice and lost five times when hosting Bowling Green. The Chargers picked up their first WCHA victory in program history at Bowling Green last season in overtime.
OPENING THE GATES: UAH has a record of 1-5-0 in home openers over the past six years. The last win to open the home slate occurred in the 2008-09 campaign, when the Chargers topped Bemidji State by a score of 4-2.
THE ROAD AHEAD: Following the Chargers first home series, the squad will be on the road for series at Minnesota State, Northern Michigan and Air Force. The MSU series is the lone WCHA games UAH will have in the six-game road swing.
YOUNG ONES: Five freshman received playing time this past weekend at Colorado College, which included
Cody Champagne,
Max McHugh,
Josh Kestner,
Brennan Saulnier, and
Brandon Parker. Parker was the lone freshman to record a point in the series.
About the Falcons
LAST WEEKEND: BGSU opened their season this past weekend with a home-and-home matchup with Miami (Ohio). Bowling Green won the opener at home by a final score of 3-2, but fell on the road matchup in Oxford, Ohio by a final of 3-2. Last season the Falcons finished with an 18-15-6 overall record and 13-11-4 in WCHA play.
KEY PLAYERS: Kevin Dufour scored three goals last weekend against the RedHawks on a .429 shooting percentage. Nolan Valleau has a team-best four points after a four-assist weekend against Miami. BGSU split time in goal between Thomas Sholl and Tommy Burke, and the pair combined for a .923 save percentage and 2.50 goal against average.
NEXT MATCHUP: The Chargers and Falcons will wrap up the 2014-15 campaign at Bowling Green on March 6-7.
