MIAMI SHORES, Fla. |
Dina Saunders came off the bench to score 22 points, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team bounced back with a 68-54 victory in the season's second contest, defeating host Barry on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers move to 1-1, while the Bucs slip to 1-1.
Â
The victory marks the first as a head coach for UAH's
Andrea Lemmond.
Â
Saunders was terrific in the contest, hitting seven 3-pointers to total the 22 points, leading a group of four UAH players who scored in double figures. Joining Saunders was freshman
Loren Foster who scored 12 on four made 3s, while
Halle Jarnagin added 11 and
Shannon Steinert chipped in with 10 in the triumph.
Â
The Chargers shot a stunning 65 percent from the field in the opening half, including going 9-for-14 from beyond the arc, but the hosts were able to hang with the squad as the two teams went into the locker room at the break with UAH holding a 38-36 lead.
Â
UAH's advantage grew to 10 at the 13:38 mark of the second half after a Foster triple, but Barry quickly answered with a pair of baskets to cut the lead to 48-42 in favor of the visitors. It was at that point that the Chargers completely took over the game, going on a 16-0 run over the next five minutes to go up 64-42 with 7:21 remaining in the contest.
Â
Barry – who was paced by Ashley Lutz's 17 points – could pull no closer than 13 the rest of the way after UAH claimed the 22-point advantage.
Â
For the game, UAH connected on 53.5 percent of its attempts and hit 16 shots from beyond the arc, hitting 3s at a 51.6 percent clip, and the Blue and White's defensive effort held Barry to a shooting mark of just 28.8 percent. Despite an eight-rebound showing from Jarnagin, Barry would hold a slight 31-27 edge on the glass.
Â
Of UAH's 23 successful field goals, 19 featured assists as both Steinert and freshman
Chandler Elder picked up five helpers.
Â
The Chargers will now return to Huntsville as the team will play its home opener on Monday night when Trevecca Nazarene visits. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
