About the Chargers...
LAST WEEKEND: UAH earned its first WCHA win of the season by a 5-2 score on Saturday night to earn the conference series split against the visiting Lake Superior State Lakers. LSSU won the defensive struggle on Friday in the opener by a score of 1-0.
HOME SWEET HUNTSVILLE: The Chargers picked up their first home victory since the 2010-11 campaign when UAH defeated Bemidji State by a 4-3 score on Jan. 8, 2011. In between Saturday's win and the win in 2011, UAH was 0-28-3 in home contests. The Chargers are 2-2-1 so far in the month of November this season.
OFFENSE ERUPTS: UAH posted five goals and eight assists in Saturday's win, which is the highest mark of the season in a single game for both statistical categories. Senior
Jeff Vanderlugt led the Chargers offense with three points on one goal and two assists, followed by freshman
Max McHugh with two points from one goal and one assist.
GUERRIERO CONSISTENT: Sophomore
Carmine Guerriero made both starts in the series against Lake Superior State this past weekend, his first back-to-back start of the season. Guerriero came out on the losing end of the defensive struggle on Friday night, despite totaling 33 saves. He continued to play well on Saturday, noching his second win of the season after a 23-save performance and held LSSU to zero goals on 10 power-play opportunities. YOUTH THRIVING: The Chargers have four underclassmen leading the way in points sthis season.
Brandon Carlson (2g-3a),
Max McHugh (3g-2a),
Matt Salhany (1g-4a) and
Brandon Parker (0g-5a). McHugh leads UAH with three goals, while Parker has a team-high five assists.
IMPROVING ON BOTH SIDES: UAH owns a total of 60 points from 22 goals and 38 assists this season, which ranks above the Chargers' 31 points on 11 goals and 20 assists through 12 games last season. The Chargers defense has also improved since the previous season, totaling a 2.96 goals against average compared to 4.75 goals against through 12 games in 2013-14.
FRESHMEN IMPRESS: Second-year head coach
Mike Corbett's first full recruiting class has continued to impress as the season has progressed.
Max McHugh (3g-2a) and
Brandon Parker (0g-5a) headline the class as the pair is tied for the team lead in points with five, followed by
Brennan Saulnier (1g-3a),
Josh Kestner (2g-1a),
Cody Champagne (1g-1a) and
Richard Buri (1g-0a). The UAH freshmen have combined for 20 points so far this season, the most for any class on the roster.
About the Bulldogs...
MATCHUP HISTORY: The Chargers will travel to Big Rapids, Michigan for the first time since the 2010-11 campaign when UAH lost a pair of games to Ferris State on Feb. 11-12, 2011. UAH welcomed Ferris State to the VBC last season, falling in both games by scores of 5-0 and 3-2. The Chargers hold an all-time series record of 2-9-0 against the Bulldogs.
RECENT ACTION: Ferris State is in the midst of a four-game homestand after hosting Alaska Anchorage last week, adding conference victories over the Seawolves by 10-2 and 4-0. The Bulldogs series against UAH will be the third WCHA series at Ewigleben Ice Arena as Ferris State welcomed No. 1 Michigan Tech on Oct. 24-25.
FERRIS STATE PROFILE: The Bulldogs are led offensively by junior Matt Robertson with nine points (4g-5a), followed by sophomores Gerald Mayhew (4-3--7) and Chad McDonald (5-2--7). Overall, Ferris State has accumulated 65 points from 25 goals and 40 assists, and the Bulldogs currently sit tied for fourth with Northern Michigan with six league points. CJ Motte has started all 11 games in the crease for Ferris State, compiling a 1.58 goals allowed average and a .948 save percentage.
