Box Score FAIRBANKS, Alaska | The University of Alabama in Huntsville (3-12-2, 2-9-0 WCHA) hockey team was edged by Alaska (9-8-0, 4-7-0 WCHA) in overtime in the conference series opener on Friday night at the Carlson Center by a final score of 2-1.
Goalie
Carmine Guerriero shined for the Chargers on Friday night, totaling 44 saves on the evening. Guerriero has notched 30-plus saves in nine of his 11 starts in the 2014-15 season.
The Chargers and Nanooks skated to a scoreless tie through the first 20 minutes of play at the Carlson Center, which continued until the midway point of the second period.
UAH points leader
Max McHugh put UAH on the board with a 1-0 advantage following his fourth goal of the season at the 9:08 mark of the second, thanks to helpers from fellow freshman
Cody Champagne and junior
Chad Brears. McHugh now has nine points this season from four goals and five assists.
Alaska's Alex Hajdukovic jumped in on the scoring action at 11:53 of the second period to knot the game at 1-1. The 1-1 tie held throughout the remainder of the frame.
Guerriero was especially excellent in the third period when he stopped all 17 of the Nanooks' shots in the final 20 minutes of regulation. Overall, the Nanooks outshot the Chargers 46-17 on the night.
UAH went to overtime for the third time this season, and the Chargers previously tied in both of those instances. However, the Nanooks' Tyler Munson scored 1:23 into the overtime period to drop the Chargers in the conference opener.
Offensively, Brears led the squad with four total shots on goal to go along with his assist in the second frame. Sophomore
Cody Marooney and McHugh came in second on the roster the three shots apiece.
Sophomore defenseman
Brandon Carlson aided Guerriero in his strong outing with a team-high two blocks, giving him 43 total blocks on the season.
UAH and UAF will wrap up the conference series on Saturday at the Carlson Center. Puck drops at 10 p.m. CST in Fairbanks.
